Use props when:

  1. Ive used up all my games and I still need the children's attention to stay with me
  2. They can be a great incentives to be able to 'look in my bag' for just more smile
  3. It is a great was to shift the focus and redirect
  4. A game or activity can be created

Things to consider when choosing props:

  1. Choose a favorite toy or dress up or magic wand which you would not mind seeing in your family photos in years to come
  2. Consider the colors of the props. If your families outfits are neutral a bright toy may over power
  3. Is this something your child will not let go of?

What is in my prop bag?

My bag varies from shoot to shoot but here are a few favs.

  1. brid wings
  2. bubble wands
  3. a trolly for pulling
  4. masks and capes
  5. magic wands
  6. wooden rocking kangaroo
  7. small trampoline
  8. Tee Pee

I use props only when i need to shift or gain focus. Props are saved towards the end of the shoot when the children can start loosing attention. Once the props are revealed it is difficult to have any pictures without props, which is why its best to save to the end. I always encourage parents to pack a few props that can help in a potentially difficult situation and can add joy, smiles and fun.
